Updates on kits and the magazine
Now that Silicon Chip Publications is producing this fine magazine,
I decided that we should overcome the difficulties we have been
having since 2021 in selling items like kits to customers in the UK.
That was when the UK government decided to change VAT laws in
a way that made it very difficult to sell to customers in the UK from
outside.
We made the necessary changes to our website and procedures
to sell to UK customers in early July. Unfortunately, we are still
waiting for the UK government to give us the go-ahead. It seems like
a silly situation to be in, but we must follow the applicable laws.
Unfortunately, that means waiting for the gears of officialdom to
turn, and they turn very slowly...
I apologise if any readers saw offers of kits in the September issue
and have not been able to purchase them yet. Rest assured that you
will be able to do so as soon as we are given the go-ahead. I hope
that they will be available to purchase before this issue even reaches
you; we shall see.
Technical enquiries
We regret that technical enquiries cannot be answered over
the telephone. We are unable to offer any advice on the use,
purchase, repair or modification of commercial equipment or the
incorporation or modification of designs published in the magazine.
Questions about articles or projects should be sent to the editor
by email: pe<at>pemag.au
Projects and circuits
All reasonable precautions are taken to ensure that the advice and
data given to readers is reliable. We cannot, however, guarantee
it and we cannot accept legal responsibility for it.
Some projects and circuits published in Practical Electronics
employ voltages that can be lethal. Do not build, test, modify or
fix any mains-powered equipment unless you fully understand
the safety aspects involved and you use an RCD (GFCI) adaptor.
Component supplies
Silicon Chip Publications may offer kits or other parts for making
our projects, but not in all cases. When kits are not available,
readers will need to find and source parts themselves. We advise
readers to check that all parts are still available before commencing
any project in a back-dated issue.
Advertisements
Although the proprietors and staff of Practical Electronics take
reasonable precautions to protect the interests of readers by
ensuring as far as practicable that advertisements are bona fide,
the magazine and its publishers cannot give any undertakings in
respect of statements or claims made by advertisers, whether
these advertisements are printed as part of the magazine, or in
inserts. The Publishers regret that under no circumstances will
the magazine accept liability for non-receipt of goods ordered,
or for late delivery, or for faults in manufacture.
Transmitters/bugs/telephone equipment
We advise readers that certain items of radio transmitting and
telephone equipment which may be advertised in our pages
cannot be legally used in the UK. Readers should check the law
before buying any transmitting or telephone equipment, as a fine,
confiscation of equipment and/or imprisonment can result from
illegal use or ownership. The laws vary from country to country;
readers should check local laws.
2
Besides that ‘red tape’ delay, it seems that the changeover has gone
pretty smoothly. Readers appear to have figured out the new online
renewal process via our website. We have also spent quite a lot of
time and effort trying to clean up the Practical Electronics online
shop, which was missing quite a few items, had incorrect stock
levels for various products etc. It’s still a work in progress but we
feel that it’s in much better condition now than when we took over.
I must thank Matt Pulzer of Electron Publishing for being very
helpful in guiding me during this transition period. We have plenty
of experience in publishing magazines, but each magazine has its
own quirks and procedures and they would have been very difficult
to navigate without the assistance we have received.
You may notice that Net Work is considerably shorter in this issue
that it has been in the past. Alan Winstanley has decided, after
doing this for a long time, that he wants to cut back on the time he
spends writing for PE. I’m happy he has decided to continue writing
for us, even if it’s in a reduced capacity. Something is better than
nothing!
We have managed to fit an extra couple of articles in this issue on
topics that I think PE readers will enjoy. Please feel free to send
feedback (positive, negative or other) to the email address at the top
of the sidebar.
