Editorial
Hello from the other side of the planet
If you read last month’s editorial, you will know that Matt Pulzer
has retired as Editor and Publisher of Practical Electronics magazine.
He asked us to take over due to the close relationship and many
similarities between Silicon Chip magazine and PE. You will no
doubt be aware that PE has been republishing our projects and some
other articles for well over a decade now.
You will have to judge for yourself how well we have done on our
first issue. It has been over six years since I took over Silicon Chip
and the feedback since then has generally been positive, so this is
not my first rodeo.
As Matt stated last month, we will not be changing any of PE’s
regular content; the articles will remain much the same. I do intend
to run an extra article or two each month, as we have a lot of great
content that I think readers in the UK, Europe and USA will enjoy.
With a new Editor, you will have to expect some differences. While
Australian English is very close to British English, there are a
few slight variations in spelling and grammar. You will probably
notice that (somewhat unusually), we don’t add “ue” to the end of
words like analog, dialog and catalog. Yes, those are the American
spellings, but the ue-suffix does nothing but make those words
needlessly longer.
Projects and circuits
You may also notice a few slight changes in the magazine’s style
over time, most of which will (I hope) be beneficial.
Some projects and circuits published in Practical Electronics
employ voltages that can be lethal. Do not build, test, modify or
fix any mains-powered equipment unless you fully understand
the safety aspects involved and you use an RCD (GFCI) adaptor.
Changes to subscription renewals
I had hoped we could keep the subscription system unchanged
when we took over the magazine. Unfortunately, it turns out that is
not possible as we are not based in the UK. That means we have had
to make some adjustments to how subscriptions are paid.
All reasonable precautions are taken to ensure that the advice and
data given to readers is reliable. We cannot, however, guarantee
it and we cannot accept legal responsibility for it.
Component supplies
Silicon Chip Publications may offer kits or other parts for making
our projects, but not in all cases. When kits are not available,
readers will need to find and source parts themselves. We advise
readers to check that all parts are still available before commencing
any project in a back-dated issue.
Advertisements
Although the proprietors and staff of Practical Electronics take
reasonable precautions to protect the interests of readers by
ensuring as far as practicable that advertisements are bona fide,
the magazine and its publishers cannot give any undertakings in
respect of statements or claims made by advertisers, whether
these advertisements are printed as part of the magazine, or in
inserts. The Publishers regret that under no circumstances will
the magazine accept liability for non-receipt of goods ordered,
or for late delivery, or for faults in manufacture.
Transmitters/bugs/telephone equipment
We advise readers that certain items of radio transmitting and
telephone equipment which may be advertised in our pages
cannot be legally used in the UK. Readers should check the law
before buying any transmitting or telephone equipment, as a fine,
confiscation of equipment and/or imprisonment can result from
illegal use or ownership. The laws vary from country to country;
readers should check local laws.

Most subscribers pay via the web. If that describes you, we will be
directing you to the Electron Publishing shop from now on (as it
was a couple of years ago). You can pay us directly that way, and we
will handle the subscription renewal. If you can’t pay via the web
or don’t want to, you will still be dealing with Select Publishing
Services.
I don’t expect this to cause anyone problems, but please bear with
us during the transition. Don’t be surprised if your next renewal is
a little bit different than the last one. I’m sure we’ll have everything
running smoothly soon.
